Swim · Bike · Run. The Romanian title decided over four formats.
17 May 2026 · Tulcea, Tulcea
Three sports, two transitions, one cumulative time. The Romanian National Triathlon Championship runs across the federation circuit — from sprint to long-course — at the country's open-water venues. Bring your tri-suit, your wetsuit if the water reads cold, and the AG bracket you've been training for.
About this championship
The four formats
World Triathlon distance formats, raced under FRTRI rules. The distance you pick locks the swim wave, the drafting policy, and the penalty grid. Most CN-class weekends host the Sprint and Olympic distances; the host event may add Supersprint for youth and Half/70.3 for long-course.
Entry-distance — Youth, Junior, first-timers.
Swim · Bike · Run
Drafting: Non-draft (age-group) · Elite wave is draft-legal
Who: Youth A/B · Junior · 1st-timers
T1 and T2
Cumulative timing across three sports means the podium can be lost in transition with a fumbled helmet strap. The transition area opens the day before the race for bike racking. Your slot is your number; your helmet is clipped before you touch the bike.
Rack the day before by your assigned race number. Brake check, gear check, transition layout briefing. Late racking forfeits your slot.
Wetsuit off, helmet clipped before you lift the bike, run to the mount line. Mounting before the line = penalty.
Dismount before the dismount line, rack the bike in your slot, kit change, run exit. Don't drop the bike outside your slot.
Mount/dismount line, equipment, littering: 10/15/30/60 sec by distance (Supersprint / Sprint / Olympic / Half). Drafting violation = blue card, non-contestable.
Water temperature
Official measurement is taken on race morning. The call is announced at the athlete briefing and posted at the swim start. Thresholds below are the World Triathlon age-group standard; Elite races use stricter thresholds.
Wetsuit mandatory. Race is called if water drops further past federation minimum.
Wetsuit optional. Your choice; most age-groupers wear one through the upper end of this band.
Wetsuit only in a non-competitive wave (no awards, no qualification). Most racers swim without.
Wetsuit forbidden. Race may be shortened or modified for athlete safety.
Bring the suit. The call is made on race morning, not before — pack for both.
Who races
Five-year tranches per World Triathlon. FRTRI mirrors these for the National Circuit. Junior and Youth tiers race shorter distances at most hosts; the Sprint is the canonical age-group title.
Twelve 5-year tranches. Wave start by bracket, fastest brackets seeded first.

FAQ
Depends on the morning's water temperature. Mandatory below 16.0 °C; optional from 16.0 to 24.6 °C; non-competitive wave only from 24.6 to 28.8 °C; forbidden above 28.8 °C. The call is announced at the athlete briefing on race day. Elite races use stricter thresholds.
For age-group Supersprint, Sprint, Olympic, and Half: non-draft. The drafting zone is a 12 m × 3 m rectangle behind the rider ahead — you have 20 seconds to pass and clear. Blue card = drafting violation, non-contestable, served in the penalty box. Elite Sprint is draft-legal under World Triathlon rules.
Age groups are 5-year tranches starting at 18-19, then 20-24, 25-29, …, 70+ (and Open at the entry distance). Your AG is set by your age on December 31 of the race year. AG racing typically maps Supersprint to Youth/Junior/first-timers, Sprint as the canonical national-title distance, Olympic for fitter AGs, and Half for long-course specialists. Each round publishes its category-to-distance mapping.
Bike racking is the day before by your assigned race-number slot. Inside your box: helmet (clipped before you lift the bike), cycling shoes, run shoes, race-belt with number, nutrition. No spectators inside the transition area. Late racking forfeits the slot.
Yes for the National Circuit and for AG points. FRTRI annual licence is the standard path; one-day licences are available for non-federation entrants but don't accumulate Circuit points. Elite races require an FRTRI Elite licence.
Round-dependent. AG Worlds (World Triathlon), European Champs, and IRONMAN 70.3 Worlds slots are allocated at specific qualifying rounds. The host event publishes the slot allocation in the athlete guide ahead of registration.
FRTRI-issued swim cap, timing chip, race number on the front for the run leg and visible on the rear for the bike leg, helmet (clipped before bike contact in T1), brakes that work. Wetsuit per the morning call. No headphones, no music players, no glass containers in the transition box.
Cut-off times are published per leg in the athlete guide. Missing the swim cut-off ends the day; missing the bike cut-off pulls you off the run course. AG racers near the cut-off can sometimes complete the course outside the standings as a finisher; this varies per round.
