Triathlon distances

Every triathlon is a swim, a bike and a run, raced back to back on one clock that keeps running through both transitions. The World Triathlon formats you'll see on Romanian start lists: super sprint (350 m swim, 10 km bike, 2.5 km run), sprint (750 m swim, 20 km bike, 5 km run), Olympic or standard (1.5 km swim, 40 km bike, 10 km run) and half or 70.3 (1.9 km swim, 90 km bike, 21.1 km run).

The full distance (3.8 km swim, 180 km bike, 42.2 km run) is what IRONMAN calls an IRONMAN; Romanian races at that length are rare. Many local events also run their own distances, aquathlons or duathlons, so check the distance on each race page.

Age-group races at all these distances are non-draft: you may not ride in another athlete's slipstream, and the race regulations set the zone and the penalties.

The national circuit

Federația Română de Triatlon (FRTRI) runs a national championship for each format, each at its own venue during the season. Elite, U23, junior and cadet titles need an FRTRI licence; many races also run open or age-group categories, and each race's regulations say who may enter and whether a licence is required.

Around the championships sit independent races (lake triathlons, city sprints, seaside half distances) and, from 2027, an IRONMAN 70.3 in Mamaia, which runs under the IRONMAN Competition Rules rather than FRTRI's.

Choosing your first triathlon

Start short: a super sprint or sprint lets you learn transitions without a long day. Pick a swim you're comfortable with (a calm lake or a pool swim is easier than open sea) and check whether wetsuits will be allowed; under World Triathlon rules for age-groupers on swims up to 1,500 m, wetsuits are forbidden from 22 °C and mandatory at 15.9 °C or colder.

Any roadworthy bike will do for an age-group race, but a helmet is mandatory and must stay fastened whenever your bike is off the rack. Read the race regulations for cut-off times, the bike course and the transition rules, and practise one swim-to-bike and one bike-to-run change before race day.

When you've raced an Olympic distance and enjoyed it, a half distance such as IRONMAN 70.3 Mamaia is the usual next step; plan several months of build-up.
