15 November 1987

What the race commemorates

The revolt of the workers of the Brașov truck factory, known as „Steagul Roșu”, joined by the people of the city. Since 2021, under Law 215/2021, 15 November is the Day of the Brașov Anticommunist Revolt of 1987.

  1. 14 November, evening

Workers receive heavily cut wages with no explanation. The night shift refuses to start work, beginning with Section 440.

  2. 15 November, morning

It was a Sunday and an election day. The first shift joins the strike; several thousand workers gather at 10:00 in front of the administrative building.

  3. The march

A column of about 400 people sets off for the centre along Strada Poienelor and Calea București. Workers from Tractorul and Hidromecanica, pupils, students and residents join: the column grows to several thousand.

  4. The slogans

From „We want food for our children!” and „We want heating!” to „Down with Ceaușescu!” and „Down with communism!”.

  5. At the Party building

The crowd enters the county Party headquarters; Ceaușescu's portrait is thrown out and burned, together with the Party flag.

  6. 16–25 November

Special Securitate troops arrive and the crowd disperses. Arrests follow: more than 190 people are investigated.

  7. 3 December

61 defendants receive sentences of 6 months to 3 years, served as corrective labour; many are forcibly moved to other towns.

  8. 1990

The first edition of the race along the route of the march.
