The citadel
Race day at the gate
The fortress is the venue and the destination — half the reason to drive in the morning. Here's the practical info on what to see, when it opens, and how the bib gets you inside.
The host fortress opens its courtyard on race morning for kit pickup and the finish-line ceremony. Medieval walls, restored ramparts, and the original citadel gate are part of the course at most rounds. Bring layers — autumn at altitude swings between sun and frost — and a camera. The race photographer covers the start and finish; the citadel walls handle the rest.
Some citadels (Cetatea de Scaun, Cetatea Râșnov) keep the museum-restored interior on its standard ticket. The bib opens the courtyard and the race-day exhibition; the museum is a separate ticket.

Vestitorii Cetății — the kids race
Every round runs an age-banded kids race at the citadel base. Parental consent at registration, finisher medal for everyone who crosses the line, photo with the fortress as backdrop. Family-format runs (parent + kid together) at selected rounds.
4–6 years

Flat grass loop at the citadel base. Parent runs alongside if needed.

Single loop, finish at the gate. Race photographer at the line.
10–13 years
1200 m
Mixed grass + light gravel. Kids can step up to the 2 km Popular from 13.
Family race (Team / Double)
Selected rounds (Făgăraș, Râșnov) offer a Family format — one parent + one kid run the 2 km Popular together, cross the line side by side. Single combined registration; joint finisher medal.
Parental consent at registration for every under-18 starter. Bring the kid's ID — needed at the race office.
Age categories
FRA bands + Open amateurs
Most Crosul Cetăților rounds run an Open format — no FRA licence required — with FRA-CAM Masters bands for the age-group classification. The FRA national-championship rounds (Campionatul Național de Cros at Poiana Stampei in October) are the formal cousins; this series is the soft-edge approachable version.
Open / Amatori
DefaultAmatori — the amateur classification, open to all adults without a federation licence. The default at Crosul Cetăților; most participants race here.
Masters M35–M39 (M / W)
FRA-CAMFirst five-year Masters band per FRA-CAM. Born 1986–1990 for the 2025 season; rolls each year.
Masters M40–M49 (M / W)
FRA-CAMTwo five-year bands (M40–44, M45–49) combined at most rounds when the field is thin. FRA-CAM compatible.
Masters M50–M59 (M / W)
FRA-CAMM50–54 and M55–59 bands. The largest single Masters cluster at most cetăți rounds.
Masters M60+ (M / W)
FRA-CAMM60+ combined band. Lifetime racers; usually a few starters per round.
Youth / U23
YouthU18 / U20 / U23 brackets per FRA Open. Race the Mid distance at most rounds; combined start with Open when fields are thin.

Race day at the citadel
Can I enter the fortress with my bib on race day?
Yes at most rounds — the bib opens the citadel courtyard for the participant and one companion on race day. Some citadels (Cetatea de Scaun Suceava, Cetatea Râșnov) keep the museum-restored interior on its standard ticket. The race-day exhibition and the courtyard are always included.
What shoes are recommended? Can I use spikes?
Trail shoes with a medium-profile lug are the default for Crosul Cetăților — the courses mix grass, forest path, and short fortress cobblestone. Spikes (FRA cross-country shoes) are allowed on grass and soft terrain but not on cobblestone or asphalt; max 6 mm at most organisers. Check the round's surface breakdown before choosing.
How does the kids race work? What age can my kid start?
Kids races are age-banded — 400 m for 4–6 years, 800 m for 7–9 years, 1200 m for 10–13 years. From 13–14 years kids can step up to the Cursa Populară (2 km) with parental consent. Every kid gets a finisher medal. Family / Team format at selected rounds lets a parent + kid run the 2 km together.
Do I need an FRA licence?
No at most Crosul Cetăților rounds — the series is FRA-open, no federation licence required for adults or kids. The formal FRA Campionatul Național de Cros (Poiana Stampei, October) is a separate event that requires the FRA licence. FRA-CAM Masters ranking points apply at some rounds where the host opts in; that's noted in the round's technical guide.
How does timing work?
Chip timing with the chip glued to the back of the bib number. Active or passive UHF RFID per organiser. Results posted live on time-it.go.ro or racehub.ro during the race, and on the round's page within 24 hours.
Is there a cut-off time?
Yes per distance — the Long race typically has a 2-hour cut-off, Mid 1 hour, Popular 30 minutes. Walking is fine within the cut-off. Missed cut-off redirects to the shorter route or ends the day per the technical guide.
Where do I park, and is there public transport?
Parking is usually 100–500 m from the citadel entrance — hosts publish maps in the technical guide. Public transport varies per fortress; many of the Transylvanian citadels are reachable by train + 5–15 minute walk. The round's page links the host commune's transport info.
What if it rains?
The race runs in rain, snow, and frost — cross-country is a weather sport. Cancellation only for severe weather (lightning, heavy ice) on the organiser's call. Dress in layers; bring a dry change for the finish.

Registration runs through the round's organiser, usually with two tiers — early-bird and standard. The kids race is often free or symbolic. Charitable cause supported at most rounds; the round's page names the beneficiary.
